La policía finlandesa y los guardias fronterizos abordaron el Eagle S, la madrugada del jueves y tomaron control del puente de mando, informó el jefe de la policía de Helsinki, Jari Liukku, en conferencia de prensa. La embarcación estaba retenida en aguas territoriales finlandesas, según la policía.
El Eagle S está registrado en las Islas Cook, pero fue descrito por funcionarios de aduanas finlandesas y la comisión ejecutiva de la Unión Europea como parte de la flota clandestina de petroleros de Rusia. El gobierno de Estonia se reunió en sesión de emergencia por el incidente. Los petroleros rusos clandestinos “están ayudando a Rusia a ganar fondos que apoyarán ataques híbridos rusos”, dijo el primer ministro Kristen Michal en conferencia de prensa. “Necesitamos mejorar el monitoreo y la protección de la infraestructura crítica tanto en tierra como en mar”.
Añadió que las reparaciones al cable podrían tardar hasta siete meses.
“Los repetidos daños a la infraestructura en el Mar Báltico son evidencia de una amenaza sistémica, no son simples accidentes”, declaró el presidente de Estonia Alar Karis en X. “Estonia tomará medidas para encarar esta amenaza, junto con Finlandia y otros aliados de la OTAN».
La primera ministra de Letonia, Evika Silina, dijo que estaba en estrecho contacto con Michal y el primer ministro finlandés, Petteri Orpo. “Nuestras fuerzas armadas han fortalecido la vigilancia y están monitoreando la situación”, dijo en X. “Los estados bálticos actualmente tienen suficiente capacidad de producción de energía, aunque estamos desafiados por los incidentes de los cables del mar Báltico”.
Dos cables de datos —uno que corre entre Finlandia y Alemania y el otro entre Lituania y Suecia— fueron cortados en noviembre. El ministro de Defensa de Alemania dijo que se sospecha que el incidente fue “sabotaje”, pero no proporcionó pruebas ni dijo quién podría haber sido responsable.
