Un informe de Naciones Unidas indicó este 26 de junio que el consumo mundial de drogas aumentó en la última década.

Cannabis se mantiene como la droga más consumida, con 244 millones, lo que equivale al 77 por ciento del total, señala el documento publicado en Viena.
Le siguen los opioides, con 61 millones, las anfetaminas (30.7 millones), la cocaína (25 millones) y el éxtasis (21 millones). De forma general, los estupefacientes sintéticos han experimentado una gran expansión en la última década.
Si bien el consumo varía según las regiones, la ONU advierte sobre una clara tendencia global: más personas recurren a las drogas, y lo hacen a edades cada vez más tempranas.
A esto se une que los mercados de estos productos ilegales se han diversificado gracias a la digitalización y el acceso a sustancias a través de plataformas de internet.
En 2022, se estima que 63 millones de personas sufrían trastornos por consumo de drogas, es decir, usuarios con dependencia, daño físico o psicológico, o necesidad urgente de tratamiento.
El informe subraya que los opioides siguen siendo las drogas más letales: en EE.UU., el fentanilo y otras sustancias sintéticas de alta potencia están detrás de la mayoría de las más de 100 mil muertes por sobredosis en 2023.
En zonas urbanas marginadas de América del Sur, especialmente en Argentina, Bolivia y Perú, la pasta base de cocaína (también conocida como ‘paco’) ha desatado una crisis grave de salud pública por su alto poder adictivo y toxicidad.
En Europa, especialmente en el Este, la heroína y los opioides sintéticos son las drogas más peligrosas.
En África Occidental ha crecido de forma importante el consumo de tramadol, un analgésico opioide de uso médico.
En el sudeste asiático, la metanfetamina se ha consolidado como una droga de uso habitual, con un importante aumento en incautaciones y casos graves de dependencia.
El estudio no ofrece una estimación actualizada del número de muertos causados por las drogas de forma directa, pero repite datos de 2021 con la estimación de casi 500 mil muertes en ese año.
El informe también señala que otros factores como los desplazamientos forzados, la pobreza y la violencia están ampliando el número de personas en situación vulnerable que recurren a los narcóticos.
La ONU denuncia que solo uno de cada cinco consumidores con problemas graves con las drogas tiene acceso a tratamiento y los enfoques punitivos siguen prevaleciendo en muchas regiones, en detrimento de las estrategias de salud pública y prevención.
En 2023, solo el 5.5 por ciento de las mujeres con trastornos graves por consumo de drogas recibían algún tratamiento, en comparación con el 13.6 % de los hombres, según datos del informe.
Las mujeres, señala la ONU, afrontan un estigma adicional y temores, como el de perder la custodia de sus hijos.
La estigmatización no solo reduce la probabilidad de que busquen ayuda, sino que también limita su acceso a servicios y a programas de atención, concluye el informe de la ONU.
