Un carguero que transportaba miles de vehículos a México se incendió en el Océano Pacífico y quedó a la deriva, luego de que la tripulación lo abandonara.
De acuerdo con el diario The Wall Street Journal, que citó a guardacostas estadounidenses, el Morning Midas, de 600 pies de eslora, se incendió en la noche del martes al miércoles, unas 300 millas (482 kms) al suroeste de la isla Adak de Alaska.
El buque partió de Yantai, en China, y se dirigía al puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas, en el estado mexicano de Michoacán.
Según el medio estadounidense, se han enviado tripulaciones aéreas y un buque de la Guardia Costera de Estados Unidos para atajar el incendio.
Según la empresa Zodiac Maritime, operadora del buque, la embarcación transportaba 3 mil automóviles chinos, entre ellos unos 800 vehículos eléctricos.
“Al principio se vio humo saliendo de una cubierta que transportaba vehículos eléctricos”, declaró un portavoz de la empresa, citado por el Wall Street Journal.
Tripulación logra salir del carguero incendiado en el PacíficoLos 22 miembros de la tripulación intentaron controlar las llamas pero al no conseguirlo, abandonaron la embarcación en un bote salvavidas y trasladados a un buque mercante cercano.
Aunque se desconocen los motivos del incendio, entre las causas conocidas de incendio de automóviles en buques suelen ser vehículos usados con fugas de gas u objetos inflamables olvidados en su interior que pueden inflamarse por fricción al desplazarse la embarcación.
Además, las baterías de litio utilizadas en muchos vehículos eléctricos son muy inflamables y se han dado casos de combustión espontánea.
En 2022, el carguero Felicity Ace, de 60 mil toneladas que transportaba miles de autos de lujo se hundió en el océano Atlántico tras arder en llamas durante casi una semana.
En su momento, expertos señalaron que la presencia de un gran número de baterías de iones de litio probablemente provocó la propagación del fuego y complicó los esfuerzos para extinguirlo.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children.
