Las ONG demandaron al gobierno de Trump por autorizar extracción de petróleo, poniendo en riesgo especies como la ballena de Rice y las tortugas lorde.
Cuatro organizaciones ambientales demandaron este miércoles al gobierno del presidente Donald Trump en Estados Unidos para denunciar que peligran las ballenas rorcual de Rice y las tortugas lora, endémicas del Golfo de México, por la autorización de la Administración a la extracción de petróleo y gas.
La asociación Earthjustice presentó la demanda en nombre del Sierra Club, el Centro para la Diversidad Biológica, Amigos de la Tierra y la Red de Restauración de Turtle Island contra el Servicio Nacional de Pesca Marina de EE.UU. por hacer un dictamen “inadecuado” que “permite un daño asombroso a las especies del Golfo”.
“La última opinión biológica de la Administración Trump es un nuevo obsequio para que las grandes petroleras destruyan el Golfo de México y erradiquen el rorcual de Rice, en grave peligro de extinción”, declaró Hallie Templeton, directora legal de Amigos de la Tierra, en un posicionamiento.
Aunque el Departamento del Interior de Estados Unidos puede arrendar áreas del Golfo de México a compañías de petróleo y gas o autorizar perforaciones, el Servicio de Pesca debe evaluar primero el riesgo a especies amenazadas y en peligro de extinción.
Pero las agrupaciones aseguran que el Servicio de Pesca debió completar un nuevo dictamen biológico porque un tribunal federal declaró ilegal el anterior.
El Golfo de México alberga al rorcual de Rice, una especie con menos de 100 ejemplares restantes, además de ser hogar de cinco de las siete especies de tortugas marinas del mundo: tortugas bobas, tortugas laúd, tortugas carey, tortugas lora y tortugas verdes, según detalló Earthjustice.
“La Administración Trump está trabajando arduamente para dar vía libre a las empresas contaminadoras sobre nuestras tierras y aguas, mientras que la vida silvestre y los ecosistemas del Golfo en peligro están pagando las consecuencias”, manifestó Devorah Ancel, abogada principal de Sierra Club.
Según el dictamen del Servicio de Pesca, al que accedieron los demandantes, tan solo los choques con embarcaciones matarán a nueve rorcuales de Rice y lesionarán a tres más en los próximos 45 años.
Además, sostienen que el Servicio de Pesca reconoce que estas actividades matarán o dañarán a cientos de tortugas marinas cada año por colisiones con embarcaciones, explosiones, desechos marinos y derrames de petróleo.
Las organizaciones recordaron el desastre de la plataforma Deepwater Horizon de BP en 2010, cuando murieron o quedaron dañados más de 100 mil animales protegidos por la Ley de Especies en Peligro de Extinción.
“Las ballenas y tortugas marinas en peligro de extinción del Golfo no sobrevivirán al ataque de la Administración Trump a nuestras leyes ambientales si no lo detenemos”, alertó Joanie Steinhaus, directora de Océanos de la Red de Restauración de Turtle Island.
