Naciones Unidas.- La mexicana Karla Quintana fue nombrada para dirigir la Institución independiente de la ONU sobre personas desaparecidas en Siria, según anunció el secretario general, António Guterres, en Nueva York.
La institución fue creada en junio de 2023 por una resolución de la Asamblea General de la ONU, en respuesta a los pedidos de familiares de los miles de desaparecidos en el país, tanto para esclarecer su paradero como para prestar apoyo a sobrevivientes y familiares.
Guterres subrayó este jueves que Quintana y el equipo que ella forme deberán tener la libertad necesaria para poder llevar a cabo su mandato y poder aportar algo de luz «a quienes siguen viviendo en la agonía de la incertidumbre«.
No aclaró dónde tendrá su sede ni cuál será la extensión temporal de su mandato.
En 2023, cuando se creó la institución, un centenar de organizaciones sirias e internacionales, entre ellas Amnistía Internacional y Human Rights Watch, suscribieron un comunicado conjunto en el que aseguraban que desde 2011 más de 100 mil personas habían desaparecido o sido víctima de desaparición forzada, tanto por parte del derrocado gobierno sirio como de grupos armados, entre ellos el Estado Islámico.

La elección de Karla Quintana no es del todo sorpresiva, ya que encabezó en su país la Comisión Nacional de Búsqueda de Personas Desaparecidas durante cuatro años y medio, hasta agosto de 2023, fecha en que dejó el cargo por desavenencias con el entonces presidente mexicano Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), al que acusó de empeñarse en minimizar la cifra de desaparecidos.
Cuando abandonó su cargo el pasado año, Quintana resaltó que instituciones como la que encabezaba en México deben ser ajenas a la lucha partidista y que deben tener métodos de trabajo rigurosos con el fin de no caer en errores como la doble atribución de un mismo caso o la no actualización de cada caso conforme se va disponiendo de nueva información.
