Washington.- La gobernadora de Massachusetts, la demócrata Maura Healey, instó al presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, a que evalúe si todavía tiene posibilidades de ganar a su rival, el expresidente republicano Donald Trump, en las elecciones de noviembre.
La preocupación y el pánico se ha extendido dentro del Partido Demócrata por la mala participación de Biden en el primer debate electoral con Trump del pasado 27 de junio, pues se han multiplicado las voces que creen que no es apto para seguir en el cargo a sus 81 años.
«La decisión la tiene que tomar el presidente. En los próximos días, le insto a que escuche al pueblo estadounidense y a que evalúe cuidadosamente si sigue siendo nuestra mejor esperanza para derrotar a Donald Trump», dijo Healey en un comunicado.
La gobernadora afirmó que Biden salvó la democracia estadounidense en 2020, cuando ganó a Trump en las urnas, y le agradeció su «liderazgo», pero remarcó también que las elecciones del 5 de noviembre son las más importantes que hay.
«Decida lo que decida el presidente Biden, seguiré comprometida a hacer todo lo que esté en mi mano para derrotar a Donald Trump», agregó.
Demócratas prometen apoyo a Biden.
Healey es la primera gobernadora demócrata que sugiere abiertamente que Biden debería reconsiderar su candidatura por la presidencia estadounidense.
El presidente se reunió el miércoles a puerta cerrada con varios gobernadores del partido para calmar los nervios, entre ellos dos de los favoritos para un posible revelo: el de California, Gavin Newsom, y la de Míchigan, Gretchen Whitmer.
A la salida del encuentro, los mandatarios de Nueva York, Kathy Hochul; de Minesota, Tim Walz; y de Maryland, Wes Moore; aseguraron que prometieron su apoyo total a Biden.
Otras influyentes figuras del Partido Demócrata como el expresidente Barack Obama (2009-2017), han expresado el apoyo al presidente, sin embargo, hay opiniones encontradas dentro de esta fuerza política y algunos congresistas y donantes han pedido a Biden que se retire.
